We all want to accomplish great things and be known for something significant. The desire to be great can be so strong sometimes we can barely think about anything else.

Is it possible to remain average and never accomplish great things? Yes, it is! I have observed in life, each one of us belongs to a category. I define category as the field in which you have chosen to make a living from which could be where you work or your business.

No matter where you are in your life right now or what you are doing, you definitely belong to a category. Your category might not seem amazing to you but it is a category nonetheless.

You might belong to a category of bakers or a category of project managers. However, the most important thing is for you to become a king in your category. Becoming a king in your category means becoming the best in your field or like Robin Sharma puts it so aptly ‘BIW’ which means Best in World.

Here a few tips on how you can become a king in your category:

Be passionate about what you do

You cannot go far in life without passion. Some people say passion is not so important. I dare say it is. Charlie White said it best:

“The most important thing is being passionate about what you are doing and always give it your all. That is the key to success.”

Always remember people are your greatest asset

You need people in order to truly succeed. Don’t treat people disrespectfully. Remember in order to become a king in your category, you need to have loyal followers. A king is incomplete without his followers.

You can’t be right or perfect all the time. In areas where you fall short, your people will complement you and fill the gap in those areas.

Know why you are in your category

Why exactly are you in your chosen category? What do you plan to make of your category? Do you want to be a starter and back out later on to allow other people to grow? Or do you want to grow your category yourself?

Are you a serial entrepreneur? You probably love starting businesses or categories but not finishing. Or are you someone who likes to put the nuts and bolts to a business or category which has already started? It’s wise to know yourself so you can play on your strengths and not your weaknesses.

Study the people who started your category

If you don’t know where you started from, how can you know where and how to continue? It is wise to study the founders of your category. Why did they start this category? What challenges did they face and how did they overcome them? This way you can truly enhance and become a king in your category.

Practice! Practice! Practice!

Simone Biles is an accomplished gymnast and the most decorated American gymnast today not just because she is so talented but because right from the age of 6, she practiced and practiced and practiced. Practice to become the best. Work exceptionally harder than anyone else.

Robert Greene, the author of 48 laws of Power said he does not believe in genius. He says exceptional talent is about hard work. If you work really hard at something, you will display exceptional talent over time.

Stay humble and nimble

This also means stay teachable. Stay agile. Don’t become complacent. This world is so dynamic and there is absolutely no room for stagnation. Don’t ever get to the point where you feel like you have arrived. Keep learning; there’s always something new to learn.

It is very possible for anyone to become a king in his/her category. Decide today to become BIW and gradually you will become a master of your game.

I would love to hear from you. What is the number one thing you can do today to become BIW? What is stopping you from becoming BIW? Please leave your comments in the comments section.
