5 Things You Need to Do Before 2016 Is Over

We have 7 days left before we go into 2017. How will you end 2016? You need to end it in a great and decisive way and not in a haphazard way.

This year was very painful for me. I had to learn to see the glass as half full and not half empty. If I had not learned that, I probably would have run out of my mind. I was grateful and not bitter.

As if the year had not been painful enough, I had a terrible experience a few days ago. I was on my way back from a friend’s place; I had the most wonderful time and was so happy on my way back home. I got into a bit of traffic and the next thing I knew, a car rammed right into the back bumper of my car.

My car’s back bumper was really messed up and dragged on the ground. The driver of the car that rammed into mine kept telling me how sorry he was. He kept begging and I decided to let things be and let him go. Of course it might not seem like a wise thing to do but I just couldn’t leave the issue to the driver to resolve. Thankfully, some men helped me to unscrew my car’s bumper and put it in the car.

I was so angry at first but I had to remind myself to not be bitter. Bitterness only clogs your heart. It took a lot to sort it out but I am glad I didn’t allow my emotions get the best of me. This led me to think deeply about the year again along with its many disappointments in the areas of my business, relationships and so on.

I made some really bad business decisions this year and I had to learn from failures. Is the glass half-empty or half-full for you? This question makes me remember my mother. Despite the experiences we have gone through as a family, she is still so optimistic about life it is amazing. In light of this, I would like to share 5 things with you which I feel you need to do before 2016 is over.

Share gifts with someone who might never be able to repay you

There are so many people in need of help to meet their basic needs — feeding, shelter and clothing. Think of how you can help someone before the end of 2016. You could visit an orphanage or a home for young women.

Look through your closet for clothes you don’t need and buy food items. Also consider contributing fully or partly towards educating a child in 2017.

Share the experiences you have gained this year with someone else

Don’t keep what you have learned to yourself. Once you are able to teach someone else, you will be able to easily let go of the past disappointments and failures. You will see the good in the ‘ugly’.

You don’t have to give a grand public speech to a large audience. You could just share with a friend, colleague or someone younger than you. Make sure you impart wisdom to someone before 2016 is over. It would definitely make your mistakes worth it.

Be true to yourself

Who are you really? Have a long deep conversation with yourself. What did you do in 2016? What didn’t you do? What made you not meet your goals this year?

It is good to know where you have been so you can let go of the past and move forward successfully. After you have done this, don’t stay stuck in 2016. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

Count your blessings

Be grateful. Like I asked earlier, is the glass half empty or half full? Be grateful no matter what. Don’t complain consistently. Write down the good things which happened to you this year. It could be something as seemingly simple as the fact that you didn’t lose a family member this year.

Writing down in detail the things you are grateful for will help you quickly get over the pain of disappointments. You would also realize despite the recession, 2016 was really not so bad.

Forgive yourself and everyone else

Are you still hurting from the mistakes you made or from things other people did to you? You need to forgive yourself and anyone who has hurt you. Start 2017 on a clean slate. Don’t go into 2017 with bitterness or resentment or lack of self-worth.

It is so critical to go into 2017 with a clear head. Doing these 5 things will not only give you a clear head and mind; they will also help you to do so much more in 2017.
